Mali Junta melts all political parties in the recent opposition campaign

The Military Council in Mali has dissolved all political parties in the country amid a growing campaign against the opposition since the army seized power.

“All meetings of members of political parties and organizations of a political nature are resolved through national territory,” according to a presidential decree on State TV on Tuesday.

He was signed by military leader Asseimi Goïta, who seized power after the coup in 2020 and 2021 and is scheduled to remain in power for at least another five years despite pledges to elections.

This step is expected to provoke new resistance by the political parties that demand the country to return to democratic rule.

Since last year, the military authorities have intensified a campaign on political activity.

Last week, in the wake of a rare protest in support of democracy, two opposition leaders were kidnapped by armed men who say they were police officers. The authorities did not comment on the reported arrests.

A national conference organized by the regime – but it was boycotted by the leading opposition parties – Last month, he recommended the name Gen Goïta as president until 2030.

This step has sparked condemnation from opposition figures and human rights groups. JUNTA was originally committed to holding elections in February 2022.

Financial Presidential Decree warned against ignoring the solution of political parties, but did not specify any sanctions.

He said that anyone working in a political or administrative role can “continue his duties without the party’s affiliation.”

The matter follows the suspension of all political activity – another recommendation from the National Congress – which caused an uproar among the opposition.

A hundred -party alliance planned to protest the transitional authorities last week, but it was postponed after the suspension of political activities.

Opposition leaders condemned the solution of political parties.

“Regardless of the difficulty of an attempt to make you invisible, your value does not depend on their recognition,” Nocum Togo, President of the Federation, to protect the Republic Party (USR), was published on social media.

Musa Mara, the former Prime Minister and leader of the Yelma Party, described the restrictions of the Military Council as dealing with a “severe blow to the reconciliation efforts that started last year.”

Analyst ULF Lassing said that the country’s military leaders were trying to “break the old elites that have been responsible since independence and considered it very close to France former colonial authority.”

Since the power was taken, the leader of the military council formed an alliance with the coup leaders in the neighboring Burkina Faso and Niger, where he prepared the region towards Russia after significantly reducing relations with France former colonial authority.

Gen Goïta Mali withdrew from the Ecowas Regional Group due to its demands to restore democratic rule. Burkina Faso and Niger also left the assembly.
