Munguia activates rematch clause after Surace’s upset
Jaime Munguia’s promoters at Zanfer plan to trigger a rematch clause to force a rematch against Bruno Sauras in the first half of 2025 after Jaime lost the super middleweight contender by sixth-round knockout last Saturday night at Estadio Caliente in Tijuana, Mexico.
An immediate rematch with Surace is not without risks. Although this may seem like a smart thing for Munguia’s promoters, it could backfire as he gets eliminated once again. This would ruin his career.
Unconventional item
It is unclear why Munguia’s promoters put a rematch clause in the contract for a non-title bout which he was expected to win easily. The 26-year-old Souras is not ranked in the top 15 by any of the four sanctioning bodies. For a rematch clause to be included in this fight suggests that Jaime’s promoters weren’t completely confident that he would win. It was the first side. They didn’t take any chances.
WBO junior middleweight champion Munguia (44-2, 35 KOs) entered the fight as the favorite and dominated the action through the fifth round. In the sixth game, Surace (26-0-2, 5 KOs) dropped Munguia, 28, with a right hand. The referee had no choice but to stop the fight when Munguia got back to his feet because he was in bad shape.
“I have been told that Zanfer intends to activate the clause for a rematch for Jaime Munguia vs. Bruno Suras II in the first half of 2025 after Saturday’s shock result in Tijuana. There will be details in this regard in the next few days,” said Salvador Rodriguez. X.
Risks of rematch
Then again, if Munguia falls out of the tournament again, the promoters’ decision to make a rematch with Sauras could be disastrous. They need to realize the possibility of another loss and what that could do to his already shaky career.
Munguia is popular enough in Mexico, Southern California, Arizona and Texas to handle another KO loss to Surace. However, his resistance to punches may deteriorate if Soras stops him again.
Assuming Munguia is once again knocked out by Surface, he can still count on putting up fights against the likes of Caleb Plant, Edgar Berlanga, Diego Pacheco and Christian Mbilli. In other words, Munguia could be a gatekeeper or test horse for younger fighters to gain experience against a faded former world champion.
