Greenland’s opposition wins the elections dominated by independence and Trump
The right-wing opposition in Greenland won the center by winning the sudden general elections-in independence-controlled vote and US President Donald Trump pledged to take over the semi-esteemed lands.
Demokraatit right -right – which prefers a gradual approach to independence from Denmark – has achieved about 30 % of the votes, and the almost complete results showed.
“Greenland needs to stand together at an important time from abroad,” party leader Jeans Friedrich Nielsen told local media. “There is a need for loneliness, so we will enter into negotiations with everyone.”
His party will now have to negotiate with other parties to form an alliance.
Greenland – the world’s largest island, between the Arctic and Atlantic Ocean – dominated by Denmark, about 3000 km (1860 miles), for 300 years.
Greenland governs its own local affairs, but decisions are taken on foreign and defense policy in Copenhagen.
Five of the six major parties in the elections prefer independence from Copenhagen, but they do not agree to the pace they reach.
The Democratic Party, whose vote increased by more than 20 % in 2021, is a moderate party on independence.
Another opposition party, Naleraq, which is looking forward to the start of the independence process immediately and photographing closer relations with the United States, was second with nearly a quarter of the vote.
The existing parties, which is inuit ataqatigiit (IA) and Siumut, are heading to third and fourth – with the sake of Prime Minister Mute B egede.
About 44,000 Greenlands out of 57,000 people were qualified to cast their votes to elect 31 deputies, as well as the local government. Six parties in the polling.
Voting was voted in 72 polling stations spread across the vast island.
Greenland’s strategic site and unexploited metal resources have caught Trump’s attention. For the first time, the idea of buying the island during his first term was presented in 2019.
Since he took office again in January, Trump has repeated his intention to obtain the region.
He said during his speech to the US conference last week: “We need Greenland for national security. In one way or another, we will get it,” he said during his speech to the US conference last week.
Greenland and Denmark leaders have repeatedly rejected his demands.
EGEDE explained that Greenland is not for sale, and she deserves to be “respectful”.
