Fire and ice: epic competition between Chris Yubank Father and Najel Ben
by Dan Henderson: In the Golden Age of British Boxing during the late eighties and early nineties, no competition for fans’ imagination was more than the fierce disagreement between Chris Yabank, the father and Najin Ben. It was a struggle not only from the fists, but for personalities, ideologies and patterns of fighting – a volatile cocktail that created two of the most electrical nights in British sports history.
It contradicts the character
Nigel Ben, nicknamed “Dark Dark”, was embodied by raw aggression. A former British army soldier, Ben brought unnecessary power, wind speed, and the mentality of the street fighter in the ring. His style was brutal and punishable, and they were often overwhelming opponents with a transparent fierce.
On the other hand, Chris Iyoubank was the embodiment of calculated confidence. EUBANK was known for his theatrical behaviors, aristocracy, and laser defending, he was a long-standing man, mysterious, and difficult to frustrate. For many, he was arrogant. For others, tactical genius.
They couldn’t have been more different, making their competition more convincing.
First Battle – November 18, 1990
The first confrontation in NEC came in Birmingham. Ben Bing WBO was for the medium weight, and EUBANK was a defeated competitor. The accumulation was electrical, and a real dimension falls. They refused to shake hands. Insoices flew. She was more than just a fight – she was personal.
Long live the match until the noise. This was followed by a brutal and rear war, as both men fell heavy. EUBANK, who absorbed a tremendous punishment, gathered late and stopped Benn in the ninth round, claiming the title and attached only the second loss to the Benn profession. Bin Ali Al -Habal’s image fell, in protest against the stop, while EUBANK celebrated the British fuller of boxing.
Return match – October 9, 1993
Three years later, the theater was placed again – this time in Old Trafford in front of 42,000 fans. Both fighters were world champions now: Ben won the WBC title in medium weight, EUBANK The WBO BelT. The risks were higher, hate is not loaded.
Unlike the first meeting, the second battle was more tactical. It is still intense, still personally – but both men were older, wise and more accountable. After 12 tense rounds, the judges’ ruling is equivalent to division. Not anyone was satisfied. The audience was not. It was dramatic and dramatized, letting the competition burn from a solution.
Inheritance
Although they did not fight a third time, the competition EUBANK-Benn is still one of the most permanent boxing boxing. It was more than belts or classifications – it was about pride, identity and redemption. Their hostility was real, but over time, their mutual respect was also.
In the following years, both men talked about the emotional and physical losses of their battles. There is even a strange kinship between them now, born from the common war. Their sons-Chris Iyoubank Junior and Konor Ben-Gazo are constantly in the dispute, and it is a potential resonance in the modern era from the competition of their fathers.
But regardless of what is happening after that, Benn VS. compete. The original EUBANK represents a tall moment in British sport – a reminder that sometimes, the best battles are the battles that go beyond boxing and become part of the cultural fabric.
