The 6.2 earthquake struck near Istanbul, shaking buildings in the largest city in Türkiye, prompting people to flee residential blocks.

The earthquake was measured on Wednesday at a depth of 6.92 km (4.3 miles), according to the emergency service in Türkiye.

The size of the effect and damage remains unclear with the lack of immediate reports on losses.

The earthquake center, which hit 12:49 local time (09:49 GMT) in the Marmara Sea, was in the Silveri area, about 80 km (50 miles) west of Istanbul.

Turkish officials reported 6.2 and two subsequent smaller earthquakes.

Istanbul residents reported it was one of the most powerful earthquakes they felt for years.

People report lamps and other furniture colliding on the ground in their homes.

South Türkiye was destroyed by two giant earthquakes in 2023, when more than 55,000 people died.

Istanbul – a city with a population of 16 million people – is located 20 km north of the North Annader Rift line.
