Ukraine says four were killed in an air strike in central Kyiv

Four people were killed in a Russian airstrike in Kyiv overnight, local officials said.

The city’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said that air defenses were operating around the Ukrainian capital.

He added that windows were shattered in the Shevchenkivsky district, including a metro station, and a fire broke out in a non-residential building. It is not clear who was targeted.

The authorities warned of the threat of ballistic missiles and urged residents to go to shelters.

Videos posted online showed a car on fire and water rushing down a flooded street.

This is the second deadly attack on Kyiv this month. After a deadly raid on the city on New Year’s Day.

In the southern city of Zaporizhia, local authorities said six people were injured in a Russian raid on Saturday. One woman is said to be in serious condition.

These strikes are the latest in a war that began in the wake of Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

They follow several Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory earlier in the week.

On Tuesday, ammunition depots and chemical plants were bombed in multiple regions of Russia, some hundreds of kilometers from the border, according to the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Sources in Ukraine’s Ukrainian intelligence service told the BBC that Tuesday’s attack was a “painful blow” to Russia’s ability to wage war.

At the time, Russia said it had shot down US-supplied long-range Atakum missiles, as well as British-made Storm Shadow cruise missiles, and vowed to respond to the attack.
